Lockdown hit 22% of salaried jobs: Study

The pandemic has had a sharp impact on jobs for the youth while salaried jobs have borne the brunt of the lockdown, according to CMIE surveys. "Cumulatively, between April and July 2020, 11 million jobs were lost compared to the average employment in 2019-20. But job losses in the workforce aged less than 40 were much higher, at 19.6 million," Mahesh Vyas CMIE MD and CEO said.

Cash in circulation up 10% since lockdown

Since March 20, currency in circulation has risen to 26.9 lakh crore—a hike of 10% since the lockdown began. At the same time, the number of Rs 2000 notes in circulation has dipped sharply in two years. The preference for cash has seen year-on-year growth in currency held with the public (CwP) accelerating from 11.3% as on February 28, 2020 to 14.5% at end-March and to 21.3% by June.

RBI announces fresh OMO purchase, sale of G-Secs

The RBI on Tuesday announced special open market operations (OMO) of government securities worth Rs 20,000 crore. "On a review of current and evolving liquidity and market conditions, the Reserve Bank has decided to conduct simultaneous purchase and sale of G-Secs under OMO for an aggregate amount of Rs 20,000 crore in two tranches of Rs 10,000 crore each," the central bank said.
